After reading PayPal's policies and guidelines, I came away with the distinct impression that personal accounts could ONLY be used for sending "personal gifts & payments". It read to me like any payments for services or goods through a personal account were a violation to their user agreement. So, wouldn't collection of payments for goods (yearbooks, and services (membership dues, field trip & class fees) have to be done through a business account on PayPal?
Thanks!

Yes, there is a problem returning the membership fees or program income (class fees). The net income of a nonprofit organization should not be distributed to the members. It should stay in the organization for future use. If net income is distributed, the organization would be classified as a partnership or a for-profit corporation. One of the hallmarks of a nonprofit is that they do not redistribute their profits (i.e., their net income) to their members.

Carol, you said....."Since your surplus is from supply fees and not general membership or tuition fees, I don’t see a problem doing a refund."

Is there a problem returning general membership dues or class fees?

Happy Anniversary! I just wanted to take a moment to say "Thank You" for hosting this blog carnival and for posting my article. My daughter is a homeschooling mother also. I wish I had known homeschooling was a possibility when I was raising her. But alas, I didn't. Your articles are really helpful to those out there that want to make a difference educating their children. Thanks again.
